KIDS
Beachy Keen
Get the whole gang in flip-flops
and take the strollers, skateboards,
and unicycles to the beach. Your
clan can build (and destroy)
sandcastles, surf some of the most
consistent waves in California, and
test the limits of your sunscreen
supply until it’s time for s’mores
and spooky stories by the light of
a beach bonfire.
Surrey Up
Bust out your matching yellow
jerseys! Kids and the young at
heart will all want to burn rubber—
or at least some excess energy—
with a surrey ride along The
Strand. Only one person needs to
steer these multi-rider cycles, so
there’s no worrying about little
ones straying off course.
Training Season
Whether your little ones are just
curious or completely loco for
locomotives, they’ll have a blast at
the North County Model Railroad
Museum’s weekly Trains for Kids
event, when the resident adult
volunteers hand over the controls
and let kids run the roundhouse.
Shred the Mar
Endless waves and three miles of
primo beaches make Oceanside
the “North Shore” of San Diego,
and the surf lifestyle is what
makes wet hair and board shorts
an appropriate citywide dress
code. It’s never too early—or too
late—to learn to rip. Surf lessons
and weekly summer camps can
help you get gnarly.
Whale All Right
Sidle up to blue and gray whales,
dolphins, and sea lions. Trips leave
daily from Oceanside Harbor
year-round, narrated by an expert
captain who’ll get you close
enough to gaze into their eyes
and give each one a goofy name.
Hey there, Rupert!
Save Room for Museums
There’s plenty of sunshine and
beach time to go around, so
you have no reason not to get a
dose of arts, culture, and nature
at Buena Vista Audubon Society
Nature Center, California Surf
Museum, Mission San Luis Rey,
and Oceanside Museum of Art.
